Stimulation to Enhance Sleep

Recruiting Participants Ages 18-50 for Sleep and Cognition Study at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

The Center for Sleep and Cognition (CfSC) at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) is seeking patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or bipolar disorder with psychosis for a study exploring the ability of stimulation directed to the scalp during a nap to augment sleep. The study will take place at BIDMC in Boston (330 Brookline Ave, Boston, MA).

Participants will go through a clinical screening to determine eligibility. Eligible participants will then participate in 3 afternoon nap sessions (1 acclimation nap; 2 experimental naps) in the Center for Sleep and Cognition at BIDMC, with at least a 12 day delay break between the two experimental naps. One nap will also include light stimulation using transcranial electrical stimulation (tES). Participants will be asked to track their sleep for 1 week prior to each experimental nap using an electronic sleep log. Participants will complete measures of cognitive and emotional processing before and after the naps as well. Standard compensation is $380 for successful completion of the entire protocol (lunch will also be provided prior to each nap).

To be eligible, subjects must be between the ages of 18 to 50 and must complete a screening session to determine eligibility. Again, we are exclusively seeking patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or bipolar disorder with psychosis.
